Good to brainstorm - 2 minds are always better than one!

I think this 'multiple listings in camelcase' would work, but it is tedious as you say.

I'm dialoguing with a few others on this one and will keep you in the loop

Just to give you a bit more background:
I'm moving across from a Windows program called AskSam - also a freeform database. One of the attractions of DT is not having to fill out fields to do your indexing. However, I'm beginning to wonder whether it might not be a good idea to do something in DT a bit like this - i.e. a 'field' for Bible book, another for 'chapterstart', another for 'versestart, 'chapterend', 'verseend'and so on. Logically this should make searching easier, though I've still got to work that one out. I guess what I'm aiming at is something like the search on www.sermoncentral.com

Any further thoughts?

Thanks

Well, I've thought about this, and my solution is a bit tedious. I would enjoy brainstorming this with you. I'll give you my idea, and if it generates more ideas from you, please put them in the comments as well.

I have thought that the best way to deal with this is to put multiple verse references in when you are listing a group. In other words, instead of John 5:1-8, you would include John 5:1, John 5:2, John 5:3, John 5:4, John 5:5, John 5:6, John 5: 7 and John 5:8. I think in order for this to work, you'd have to actually make it camelcase. In other words, if you made it John 5:8, then if you searched for Corinthians 5:8, your John 5:8 might pop up. You would need to make each reference run together. John5:8. No space in between.

Then if you wanted to find an article you wrote that included these verses, your search would have to include each reference in one search.

What do you think?

Great blog - very helpful!

I'm using Devonthink as well & just wondered whether you might have found a good way of searching for Bible references in your Devonthink database.

E.g. I want to find a talk or some notes on John 6:51-18, but I don't want to find all the docs with just the word 'John' in it, and docs on John 6 might be useful, as might docs on John 5-8

Any ideas?

Thanks

I like.

2 things I wanted to point out to you:

1. For some reason, every time I visit your site it asks me for a username and password for a twitter api.
2. Jesus and the blind man is in John 9, not 6.

"The unfortunate biproduct of apocalyptic thinking is a lack of hope for what the Holy Spirit will do through the Church today"

Agreed. Apocalyptic teaching was meant to spur the ideals of living each day as if it were your last, but not many people consider the repercussions of living each day as if it were the end 365 days a year. With that line of thinking, it becomes really hard to think positively (which every Christian should strive to do). And I find it hard to instill hope, or witness well for that matter, when I'm constantly thinking about how there is little hope for the rest of humanity.

On a separate point, the clock project was something I had been following for a while. You should look into something called Longplayer.

I can understand your thinking. Unhealthy concern for the imminent return of Christ may and has caused some to freeze up and do nothing. For instance, there is a teaching out there right now that says that the Bible indicates that May 21st, 2011 is the date of Christ's return (that will be my 23rd wedding anniversary, by the way).
My philosophy has always been to occupy until He does come. Keeping in mind that His return may be any day or many decades (although that seems pretty unlikely), I believe that we need to live, work, worship, raise up the next generation, etc. It's a balance of looking forward and looking up...

Yes! You need to backup! Mozy is an excellent choice; you can get 2GB for free, or unlimited space for $4.95 / month (I've got over 170 GB with them right now). $4.95 / month is dirt cheap, but if you want to pay in advance, you can get it even cheaper with a Mozy Promotional Code. You can get 2 years for $83.16, which works out to only $3.465 / month. Less than $3.50 / month for unlimited backup?? Get to it & backup your files with an automatic, secure, and online backup solution.
