I’m currently listening to concerts from the Wakarusa festival. This is something I enjoy doing this time of the year… downloading trade-friendly concerts from music festivals. While it’s not the same as going to the festival, it has a vibe to it that I like, and it exposes me to bands I wouldn’t otherwise listen to. Current concert: Les Claypool

New podcast called jampods. This is really cool. You can subscribe to feeds from different bands, and will get 1/2 hour of a concert delivered to your itunes, or other client weekly. I subscribe to Disco Bisquits, Drive by truckers, moe. and Yonder Mountain String Band.

Just got Secret Machines from emusic.com. Absolutely love it. They are my new favorite band. A lot of people compare them to Pink Floyd. I’m not really familiar with Floyd, but really like Secret Machines. I first learned of them from a podcast on Live Music Blog

That’s all for now. check out these bands and websites. You might find something you like.

I’m still trying to figure out how to do it… I asked someone yesterday how you describe instrumental music in a blog entry. She didn’t have a clue. I think I’m going to try making a “mix tape” of links to the free online samples of music that inspires me. And the advantage of art is that there are online images available.

The meta-art that is the most meaningful to me though is impressionism. Because I’ve spent 33 years of my life as a piano player who can play both notation and by ear, classical, pop and jazz, much pop music doesn’t excite me because I can hear and understand everything that they are doing. This is why I found Frank Zappa’s classical works so enjoyable. Everything was a surprise. But in between pop/jazz and abstract is impressionism. Bartleby’s encyclopedia says that “Reflecting the impressionist schools of French painting and letters, Debussy developed a style in which atmosphere and mood take the place of strong emotion or of the story in program music.” Debussy [iTunes] [Amazon] is said to be the originator of impressionism in music. But the influence went on in different directions. Bill Evans [iTunes] [Amazon], jazz musician was heavily influenced by Debussy, and in turn, Lyle Mays [iTunes] [Amazon]was heavily influenced by Bill Evans. Music such as these artists is evocative of mood and color and takes me to other worlds in my listening. Take the time to listen to the samples at the sites I’ve given. I think you will enjoy it.

If you dig music and would like to hear something new, I suggest one of the 1994 and before concerts of Phish. I really like their music but have only really heard their later stuff. I just downloaded their Rave at Central Park concert from 1992 and it is fabulous. Way more energy then their later stuff. If you are interested, I converted the large files down to a more manageable mp3 size and could make them available. If you are bittorrent savvy there are many concerts from the 1994 era available on bt.etree.org

Some new discoveries in music some of you might be interested. They are all rock, so if your tastes aren’t there, you might enjoy Hober’s webpage and RealAudio stream or the soothing environmental sounds of Naturesong radio that I’ve been listening to when music and silence aren’t on the agenda.

I’ll go in order of music that can be downloaded free.

First is The Secret Machines. I found their music from the Jamcast podcast of their performance at this year’s Bonnaroo music festival. They are a slow burn band. Not blues. Just steady medium-slow tempo rock. You can download the jamcasts at the following links. Jamcast #28 Jamcast #29 and Jamcast #30

Second up is Elvis Costello. Caught his electric performance on Austin City Limits last weekend. Wow! What an honest, energetic performer. The most exposure I’d had up until now was that he replaces Paul Schaeffer as band leader on the Late Show with David Letterman. He is really the only suitable replacement for Schaeffer. Honest rock. Funny personality. There’s a wealth of audio for download at www.elviscostello.info

Finally, The Mars Volta. I discovered this band through an article that was critical of Trey Anastasio’s live show because bands like The Mars Volta were tearing up stages. I went search for live music from my usual sources, bt.etree.org and archive.org only to come up empty. I listened to some samples on the itunes music store and was very impressed. They are a progressive band with a lead vocalist that reminds me of Freddie Mercury. They are fairly intense and not for the faint of heart. For the life of me, I can’t understand any of the lyrics from Scab Dates (their recent live album). A quick search on the lyrics sites revealed that they are very introspective and interesting. You can listen to the Scab Dates album at their website here.

It was pretty hot at the time but later I replaced it with a higher tech Alesis HR-16. After awhile I came to regret this decision. The TR-909 was a hybrid digital/analog machine and as such it’s drum sounds weren’t quite as photo-realistic as the Alesis, but it had more warmth and character. Then, of all things, it became popular in rap music and suddenly used machines were too expensive to buy one back. A quick scan of ebay reveals that they are about $500. Actually not a bad price for a collector. If I had the means I’d snag one.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered slashdot running an article about propellerhead software giving away their softsynth version of the TR-909, TR-808 (Phil Collins uses this a lot) and the TB-303 bass synth. Woohoo! Downloading is in progress. Check it out for yourself at http://www.rebirthmuseum.com

Dr. Charles H. Townes, the distinguished scientist, was talking with a Bible class. The subject was the relationship of science to religion, and Dr. Townes was urging that scientific and religious thought, far from conflicting, are today finding more and more in common and are destined ultimately to merge.

Last night I had the privilege of attending the concert of the Magic Valley Symphony at the College of Southern Idaho Fine Arts Center. It was a wonderful evening with guest artist Anna Gerrish, pianist, who graduated from Filer, Idaho and went on to get her Masters in Piano performance and pedagogy.

One thing I was struck by in the concert was the miracle of classical music. The time that classical pieces were written were of great poverty and sickness. That these composers were able to work to refine their gift, find funding and perform their works with what must have been a majority of amateur musicians is a miracle.

A highlight of the evening was the performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.2 in C minor, “The Little Russian.” I have posted copyright free mp3′s of the symphony so that you can enjoy it as well.
