Live content

September 28th, 2006 · No Comments

I’m back to updating my blog more frequently. Thanks to all who hung in there while I got life back together. The main thing that changed our life was my wife newly working full time for the school district as a bus driver, and my children going to school for the first time in the history of our family. We’re finally back to some stability, and I am doing more writing both for the church and for the website.

I’d like to point out some live content that you can pay attention to if you are interested between posts. These are in the sidebar to the left.

The first item in the sidebar is 5 current books on my reading list. These are books selected from the many that I am always reading that I think might be interesting to give a taste as to what is interesting me at the moment.

Next down the sidebar are my most recently added bookmarks. I use http://del.icio.us for all of my bookmarks. I have a little button on my browser to push when I am at a website that I want to mark as a favorite. The difference between this and the standard bookmarks of your browser is that they are saved online, thus making them public. Also, you can tag the bookmarks with whatever you want. In a regular browser, you can only categorize by a folder. But what if I want to categorize the page in two different ways? For example, I am looking to upgrade my music software Protools. If you go to http://del.icio.us/jeffreyclong you’ll see that I’ve marked this website with three tags: music, digitalaudio, and wishlist. Then if I want to later look for it, I can go to http://del.icio.us/jeffreyclong/digitalaudio or click on the tags to the right and up will come all of the bookmarks I’ve tagged digitalaudio. But the other cool feature of del.icio.us is that I can create an RSS feed of my most recent bookmarks. That way, my website can automatically update things that I’ve recently bookmarked. This is a little picture into what I’m currently doing on the internet.

Finally, I’ve included an feed of the songs I’ve recently listened to. This uses a plugin from last.fm that tracks what you are listening to to create a radio station made up of music that you have demonstrated is interesting to you. A side benefit is the RSS feed of your most recently listened to tracks.

Have fun!
