Shake up your preaching preparation

February 12th, 2006 · No Comments

Today I preached a sermon on the baptism of Jesus that I felt went pretty well.  It surprised me though, in that I prepared for it differently then I normally do.  My usual pattern is to outline the text, study my commentaries and the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and then finally write out the text of my sermon.  I also have rather staid tools.  I use Devonthink Pro for outlining, using wiki links, and type my text into a devonthink document and then copy and paste into a word processor for printing.

This time around, I scribbled notes on a notecard.  Picked 2 points.  And went straight to the word processor.

The important lesson is that I think we need to change up how we prepare to keep things fresh.  Same old preparation and same old delivery results in the same old results.  Constantly trying new things and changing it up results in a fresh sermon.
