Cruft

December 2nd, 2005 · 2 Comments

Imagine my excitement when I discovered that I hadn’t made up one of my favorite made-up words: Cruft. Merlin Mann of 43folders.com had used it in reference to the Mac launcher extraordinaire Quicksilver:

It helps you minimize annoying distractions that add cruft to your day by causing a modal shift.

I’ll leave the definition up to you given the context of the quote.

So this is your new word of the day. See if you can find an opportunity to use it in a sentence. And report your experiences.

I must say, I will look for some way to use “cruft” soon in my conversational interactions. This made me think of a word that a couple of teens in our church here made up several years ago. The word is “blaumph”. It is a word that can be used in many different contexts, but as far as I can disern, it is generally used as an exclamation of sudden frustration or disappointment, much like the words “doh” or “uff da”.

    Anyway…

I’ve decided that cruft is the perfect word to describe what I have to clean off of my nose ring twice daily. Maybe not your intended context, but it works for me!
