Bleeding edge of technology: Google Talk

August 24th, 2005 · 3 Comments

LogoAs rumored, Google Talk instant messaging premiered today (writeups here and here). And being a bleeding edge technologist, I’ve already registered and activated an account. Currently there is only a windows client available, though Mac and Linux users can use any jabber client. I’m using Adium.

If you want to reach me, email me using the link to the right and I’ll send you my login name. (I’m not putting it on this screen, so as not to risk spam). Also, if you want a gmail account, I can give you an invitation. Email me with a request and I’ll send you an invitation.

Thanks for keeping us up to date, Jeff. For those of us who aren’t so technologically savvy, could you explain how googletalk is different than instant messaging? Thanks!

actually, Google Talk is yet another Instant Messaging client. different companies each have their own IM server, i.e. MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL. There’s another one out there called Jabber that most people aren’t aware of. Originally you could only use the client branded by the company that ran the server to use the IM service. Inotherwords, you downloaded MSN messenger as a client to use the MSN Instant Messaging service. eventually, some crafty programmers hacked the service and allowed non-branded clients to be able to use the servers.

Google is using the Jabber protocol for their server. That allows any client that can use Jabber to be able to use the google server. So far, I’m logged in, but don’t have anybody else in my list to talk to. Time will tell if it catches on. Really, there are already too many services. I use AOL, MSN and Yahoo. Now I’ve added google.

This all sounds interesting. Say I wanted to try this Google Talk… what would I use it for? I assume, as with any other technology such as my Palm Pilot, GT can be a tool for me, but I guess I’d want to know for what. Tanks Bro!
