One of the reasons I began blogging was as a means to get a tremendous amount of writings that I’ve done over the year into a manageable form, both for myself, my children, and vainly for those who come after me and may benefit from my neuroticl intellectual pursuits.
A dilema though, has been how to categorize them. Typepad allows the ability to set a bunch of categories that will help manage the info. But what categories?
One suggestion was to use the DMOZ set which is an open directory similar to yahoo and msn categories. I still may make use of this in the future. But the first reason I didn’t go this route was because I found it too difficult to wade through ALL the categories to label the ones I wanted. The second was that the categories weren’t subjective enough. By this I mean that they were encyclopedic… scientific… librarian-ish. That’s all well and good, but even the structure of the organization of the things I’ve been writing has meaning. That meaning is that Life is Full! And I’m wacky enough to believe that even the structure by which those writings are organized should reflect that notion.
Thus, I’ve chosen for a starting point, the catalog system that the Whole Earth Catalog uses. While it is not Christian per se, which I am, it does a better job of being amazed with life then any systematic theology I’ve ever read. These categories are from a combination of the Millenium Whole Earth Catalog, and the Winter 2000 issue of the quarterly magazine. Plus I’ve made some additions that reflect my faith, and a few deletions (more to come).
For fun and as a future reference to myself, I’ve decided to post the categories below. There should be more then one “A-ha!” as you read this as well as a few raised eyebrows. As I said, additions and deletions are coming, though they may not be where you’d put them. That’s the beauty of blogging.
